Murfreesboro is governed by a mayor with a five-member town council. The councilmen are elected for two-year terms. The town government is available to assist citizens of Murfreesboro and Hertford County with any inquiry.

Murfreesboro is one of four cities in the United States that was presented with these colorful French flags, representing the French Regiments that fought in the Revolutionary War. The other three cities are St. Louis, MO, Yorktown, VA, and Washington, DC.
